Hone your craft with Rob Costello
Since 2014, I’ve been on the faculty of the Whole Novel Workshop at Boyds Mills (formerly the Highlights Foundation), where I read and critique whole novels (hence the name of the workshop!) and mentor their authors. As part of this curriculum, I also co-lead The Writer’s Brain Trust, a unique, interactive creative writing workshop I developed with my friend and teaching partner, Nicole Valentine.

At Boyds Mills, I also frequently teach in Summer Camp, have co-hosted the Rainbow Retreat, and have led or co-led webinars on short fiction and writing horror for both queer and general young adult audiences.
In the past, I’ve also offered writing workshops to teen and homeschooled writers in the Ithaca, NY area with my friend and teaching partner, Anne Mazer.
In 2024, I founded The R(ev)ise and Shine! Residency with my partners Lesa Cline-Ransome, Jo Knowles, and Jennifer Richard Jacobson. This five-day retreat is designed to mimic a low-res MFA program residency with lectures, brainstorming sessions, manuscript critiques, and intensive one-on-one sessions with both faculty and special guest publishing industry professionals.
I have lectured on various aspects of the craft of creative writing at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, Tompkins Cortland Community College, the Spring Writes Literary Festival of the Finger Lakes, the Young Adult and Children’s Literature Conference (YA Summit) at UNLV, Boyds Mills, Hollins University, the Appalachian Studies Association Conference at Marshall University, and at the Horn Book at Simmons Colloquium.
I am also available for group or one-on-one creative writing instruction for both adults and young writers. Drop me a line to find out more.
